Information about the Hervey Bay area

Torquay Beach - Hervey Bay

Hervey Bay is one of Queensland’s best natural holiday destinations. Hervey Bay offers convenient access to World heritage listed Fraser Island – the largest sand island in the world; and Lady Elliot Island – the first coral cay on the Southern Great Barrier Reef.

It is easy to access the area with Hervey Bay being located approximately 300 kilometres North of Brisbane. It is an easy drive along the Bruce Highway with a turnoff at Maryborough to Hervey Bay. The Tilt train also provides rail services to Maryborough with a connection bus to the Bay. Sunshine Airways provides four flights per day (weekdays) from Brisbane to the Bay.

Fishing at dusk - Hervey BayHervey Bay offers visitors a variety of natural attractions, experiences and activities. Long sandy beaches fringe the Bay’s sheltered waters. Hervey Bay has also gained recognition as the Whale Watching Capital of the World – with the majestic Humpback whales stopping in to relax in the region’s calm waters, on their yearly migration south, from mid July to November. Approximately 60 000 visitors per annum experience the pure exhilaration of Hervey Bay whale watching.

The waters of Hervey Bay provide visitors a perfect, stinger free swimming environment all year round. You have the ability to undertake a variety of water based activities during your stay which include kayaking, yachting, diving, water and jet skiing, wind surfing and snorkelling. Hervey Bay boasts an aquatic environment featuring coral and artificial reefs all teeming with abundant marine life.

Shelly BeachThe great outdoors is a way of life in Queensland, and with Hervey Bay’s stable, sub tropical climate – summer temperatures averaging 29 degrees Celsius, and a winter average of 21 degrees Celsius - it is the perfect location to join the friendly locals and enjoy this coastal paradise. Hervey Bay has a great Esplanade, fully equipped with a bike/walk way stretching more than 16 kilometres along the picturesque foreshore. Enjoy the enchanting mix idyllic climate, relaxed pace, modern facilities and country style hospitality available at beautiful "Harvey Bay".

"Harvey Bay" offers a range of options to boating and fishing enthusiasts to enjoy – estuary, dam, beach, jetty, reef and game fishing. Fishing and sailing tours are conducted on a regular basis.

Visitors to the Bay can choose from a diverse range of accommodation including superbly furnished beachfront apartments, backpacker hostels, cosy bed and breakfasts, caravan and camping parks with cabins, motels and quality resorts, and self contained units. All tastes and budgets are catered for in Hervey Bay.
